The US Department of Justice conducted a survey of prison
inmates in 1991. They found that crimes were usually committed
near the criminals homes and that 43% of inmates were in prison
for crimes committed in their own neighborhoods. If the subject
is a criminal it is likely that a record will be uncovered when
all jurisdictions where he or she has lived are checked.

Criminal Background Check |
 |
| |
Detailed Criminal Record Checks are worth their weight in gold,
especially if the person you're researching has problems.
In fact, anyone putting a measure
of trust in another might want to check the Web says Kim Komando
host of the Kim Komando Radio show. Last year over 6
million people in the U.S. were in jail, prison, on parole or on
probation and a large portion of the crimes committed are by
repeat offenders. Performing a criminal records check should be
seriously considered when you have doubt about someone's past.
In the USA, criminal records are archived at the county level
and a thorough criminal records check involves manually
searching criminal records in each county where the subject has
lived.
You also have the option to find copies of court documents. |

What
is the difference between Database Criminal records lookup and Comprehensive
Criminal and Civil Court records lookup?
The comprehensive lookups cover the courts in addition to
databases. Database Criminal lookups cover database sources to
quickly check for any criminal related records, which match your
search criteria. The disadvantage of database searches is that
the records could be less detailed
and not as current as with including court searches. In other words if you want
to be thorough then choose comprehensive lookups and if you want
a general lookup then choose the Database search. Searches cover 7 year period unless the title of the
search specifies a longer period.
Please note that
records vary by state or province and different states, provinces
or territories provide different
information. |

What do Criminal Records searched
by County Include?
The criminal record is a report from county courthouses
listing all criminal offenses committed by an individual during
a given period of time. Offenses which are found on the criminal
record fall into the following three categories:
(1) Traffic Offenses: Normally, the only traffic offenses that
show on a criminal record would be serious offenses such as
"driving under the influence" or "hit and run" violations.
(2) Misdemeanors: Usually considered a less serious or minor
offense, the misdemeanor is a crime punishable by incarceration,
typically in a local confinement facility. The maximum
incarceration period is usually limited to one year or less. (A
few states classify a misdemeanor as an offense carrying a
sentence of two or even five years)
(3) Felonies: These offenses are considered more serious than
the previous two categories. Typically, a felony carries a
penalty of incarceration from one year to life in a state
prison, to the death penalty.
(It should be noted that different states classify crimes
differently. One state's misdemeanor may be another state's
felony. Civil cases, such as lawsuits between individuals or
corporations and bankruptcies, are not included on the criminal
record. The countywide search is available for all 3000+
U.S. counties, including the District of Columbia, going back as
far as 7 years. You choose the counties and lookups cover courts
of those counties. Some counties report both
felony and misdemeanor violations while others, only felonies.
Some counties hold their records from the beginning of time
while others only retain several years worth of records. |

Are police reports and arrest records part of criminal
records?
No, police reports or arrest records are not criminal records.
Police reports or arrest records are separate lookups.
to run police report or arrest record searches.
I want a thorough criminal records check. What should I
do?
A thorough criminal records check should include all of
the following: (1) Comprehensive Nationwide criminal records check
(2) Statewide criminal records check for each state that the
individual has lived in (3) Federal courts criminal records
check and (4) a countywide criminal records check for each
county that the individual has lived in.
How can I clear, expunge or seal my criminal record?
The first step is to contact the local police station where the
crime took place. They can inform you about the steps and
procedures to follow for your specific state. You can also
contact your state's repository of criminal records. It is
always recommended to consult an attorney who specializes in
criminal law. There may also be various agencies that may
offer help with clearing, sealing or expunging criminal records.
Depending on various factors you may be able to expunge or seal
your criminal record. Sealed records are records that are on
file but are not reported and expunged records are records that
are removed completely from your criminal record. |
